Surgery for Meralgia Paresthetica: neurolysis versus nerve resection.

چکیده
AIM Neurolysis with transposition of the nerve and nerve resection are commonly performed surgical procedures for appropriate managing Meralgia Paresthetica (MP). But long-term outcome of these two procedures are uncertain. This case-series study came to address follow-up results of these two surgical procedures for managing MP. MATERIAL AND METHODS We prospectively described 14 consecutive non-obese patients with clinical features of MP managed by one of the two studied procedures (nerve resection or neurolysis). Clinical variables were documented for each individual. The outcome of the surgery was assessed in follow-up visits within 18 months after the procedure. RESULTS Nine patients were treated with neural resection procedure and others underwent neurolysis technique. In the group that underwent nerve resection, all patients experienced complete relief of unpleasant symptoms and MP did not recur in any of them during follow-up, while all patients who underwent neurolysis reported MP recurrence within 1 to 9 months after treatment initiation. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that nerve resection is superior to neurolysis in terms of recurrence.

Alcohol neurolysis of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve for recurrent meralgia paresthetica.
Meralgia paresthetica is an entrapment mononeuropathy of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which results in localized area of paresthesia and numbness on the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. We describe the use of alcohol neurolysis of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve in a 74-year-old female who presented with paresthesia over antero-lateral aspect of her left thigh, which was consistent with m...

BACKGROUND The efficacy of various treatment modalities in meralgia paresthetica (MP) is not established. We retrospectively evaluated the management of spontaneous MP (i.e. MP not secondary to trauma or surgery) according to a standard algorithm. METHODS Initial management included oral medications, rest, and reduction of aggravating factors. Non-responders underwent a diagnostic local anest...

OBJECTIVE Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a syndrome of pain and/or dysesthesia in the anterolateral thigh that is caused by an entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) at its pelvic exit. Despite early accounts of MP, there is still no consensus concerning the effectiveness of neurolysis or transaction treatments in the long-term relief for medically refractory patients with MP. ...

Pregnancy, tight cloths, obesity, position of surgery and the tumor in the retroperitoneal space could be causes of meralgia paresthetica. A 29-year-old female patient underwent an ...
